Robbed

I'm telling you what, this summer has been insane.  In a matter of three weeks, I/we:
  • "delivered a baby"
  • almost died by driving off the side of a mountain
  • almost missed our airplane ride home from Colorado
  • managed to get robbed at the swimming pool
And if you think that's it, there's even more I haven't had a chance to share!  Life has not been dull!

But back to the whole "getting robbed" story.  Just when I think that surely not one more crazy thing can happen to me this summer, I get to spend my afternoon sitting in a cop car because my wallet was stolen from my bag at Sholem pool.  As soon as I realized it, Sholem workers helped me search the premises and called the cops.  I then spent a good amount of time filing a police report and canceling my credit and debit cards. Sandy Chew had graciously taken all of our kids to Custard Cup while I tried to figure things out. I asked the officer if there was any hope of recovering my wallet, aside from the $50 cash which I knew was long gone (and I NEVER carry cash; it was leftover from vacation!). He was not very hopeful. He said that they had probably taken what they wanted and dumped it in a trash can or in someone's yard. While I was waiting for Sandy to come pick me up, I decided to go out and search the parking lot. I walked out to the furthest trash can and peeked down inside, and I thought I could see a corner of it! I thought maybe I was delirious. The trash cans there are 10 ft. deep into the ground and have lids screwed on top, so I went to get a worker. She came out and looked and said she could see it too! We had to call several workers and the police officer back to try and recover it. No one could get the top off, but all of us together were able to pull the bag up to the top, and I stuck my arm shoulder deep in trash, and I got it. My cell phone and cash were gone, but that was the least of my worries. I had a set of keys to both of our cars, our house keys, my church keys, my drivers license, my credit/debit cards, my health insurance cards, etc.  All of that is worth nothing to anyone else but a lot to me! I am very thankful to the kind men who helped me recover it. I am very disappointed that a person would not only steal, but that they would dump my things in a trash can to never be found. Couldn't they have just dumped it in the grass or somewhere where my keys at least could be recovered? I had no way to drive my car home! And I had no way to fill up my gas tank (which was on E). If someone needed $50, I would have given it to them! I was thankful and frustrated at the same time. I learned a hard lesson.  I am too naive and trusting sometimes. They said this happens "all the time;" it's "unreal." I will be much more careful in the future!

See my wallet in the bottom of the trash can?
