I have been trying to figure out what to do with our family room for several years. No matter what I've done, it's felt like wasted space. Over Christmas, I decided to take (most of) the furniture out and make it a toy room for the kids. I got a KILLER deal on the black shelves at Target which are perfect for making the toys accessible and visible. I can now say that this room is being used every day. Since we are home just about every hour of every day, the kids should have a dedicated play space, right? And it gets the bulk of the toys out of the kids' rooms! I'm pretty happy with it!
